How to clean a charcoal BBQ

There are many aspects to consider when looking after your BBQ, with a good quality, clean BBQ having a big impact on your overall grilling experience. A build up of food debris and excess grease can cause your BBQ to heat unevenly, so having a clean grill for your next cooking session is important.

What you will need:

  • Microfiber cloths
  • Paper towels
  • Grill brush or wire brush
  • Soapy water (hot water and any dish soap)
  • BBQ cleaner spray
  • Plastic Scraper
  • Hand brush
  • Vegetable oil

How to clean your charcoal grill in 8 simple steps:

  1. Once you have finished cooking, leave the BBQ for a further 15-20 minutes, to allow food residue and baked on grease to become easier to clean and prevent solidifying.
  2. Allow the grill grates to cool down until you can no longer feel any heat from them.
  3. When using a charcoal grill, ash will build up within the ash catcher and can block up vents at the bottom of the grill, preventing proper airflow. Simply brush them out of the BBQ with a hand brush.
  4. Use a plastic scraper on the grease tray to remove high amounts of grease and break up any grease traps.
  5. Using a high quality grill brush, scrub the dirty grill and cooking surfaces to disturb any loose debris as the wire bristles of the brush will help to scrape off any food buildup from the charcoal grill grates.
  6. Using a clean cloth and hot soapy water, wash the grill cover and base of the BBQ, until it is clean of any built up debris.
  7. A spray bottle with some BBQ cleaner can be used with a dry cloth to give the entire grill a final deep clean and an extra shine after the thick of food debris has been removed and help to tackle any burned-on food and tough to clean spots.
  8. Give the whole BBQ a final dry with a microfiber cloth to prevent the BBQ from rusting.

A clean and well maintained BBQ should always use good quality charcoal for the best cooking results.
